Garry Holland Chris Ashton

Ok I am a Saints supporter, but can anyone explain what is going on in Johnson head, by keep leaving the premiership top try scorer out of the England set up, Chris Ashton, who scored another 2 tries again today against the Falcons.

What basis are the England team players picked to play for England? As I just can't understand why some players are left out, Courtney Lawes being another one. As in my opion the England set up need to blood some new younger players in readiness for

joshua young Social Media + Rugby = Greatness

November 14, 2009 by Josh Young I coach kids. Young adults. The Youth. In America, rugby is small. Its less than small. Rugby doesn’t register with the consciousness of the youth except for negative stereotypes like “crazy” and “dangerous.” Sames goes for the parents, school officials and too often, the general public as well. Its important for me as a coach, having no direct public access to kids, to communicate with them about rugby in a safe environment. I’m not a teacher or a parent. I don… Continue

Tom Chapman Back on Track

Having made what I thought was a pretty decent start to the season, I was beginning to reach some good form in my rugby. New to playing scrum-half, having moved from full-back in the summer, I felt this first couple of months of the season key to my development in the position. I played a couple of halves there for the 1st XV at school and held my own, scoring a couple of tries in the process but still couldn't make the spot my own and often played the other half of the game on the wing or in th… Continue

joshua young There is no "off-season"

Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained. - Marie Curie How much is too much? I find myself asking that question these days as I slump home, drained from emails sent, ideas created, developed and pursued and the responsibilities that come from wearing multiple hats. Being a rugby coach (bus driver, surrogate parent, friend, planner, disc… Continue

joshua young A Plea to My Fellow Coaches

Fellow coaches, Please: Allow your players to be creative; let forwards chip and grubber, allow backs behind the back passes. Be positive. Find a reason to praise that kid who needs it most, and challenge your star to always improve. Have fun and smile. Yelling and screaming is no way to live life. Stay innovative. Rugby is our art. Always changing, evolving, bettering. Never stop learning. Honor the game. Respect yourself, your players, their parents, the sir, the pitch, and most of all,… Continue

joshua young No, "Good Enough"

“A lion sleeps in the heart of every brave man.” – Turkish Proverb I coach the Eastside Lions and this is my first year. I have now seen the team grow from a core of 8 boys playing touch rugby in November, to over 20 kids, 14-19, who enjoy and love the game. The median age of our club hovers around 15.5, yet we will play several clubs who average 17-18, during our season. We welcome the challenge and opportunity to learn from our opponents and to expect the absolute best out of ourselves. Ye… Continue

joshua young Motivation

Where does our motivation to coach come from? Many of the guys I played with, who were better than I, have no interest in coaching. So why do I? Why do I spend hours a day reading about the philosophy of rugby and creating practice plans? Why do I commute 60 something miles, three days a week, on my own dime to hang out with a few kids I didn’t know three months ago? Is it: To make up for the less than stellar coaching I received as a youth? Because I could never play the game physically, lik… Continue

joshua young So, now I'm a coach

I’ve played rugby for 12 years dating back to my high school days for Kitsap, near Port Orchard and then during my glory years at Washington State University. The majority of my greatest moments involve rugby: the people I’ve met, the challenges I’ve faced, the fun I’ve had, and the friends I’ve made. This last year though, I noticed a decline in my abilities. I was always a decent player, but I found myself not being able to do well, the few things I could do well. Rather than bang away as a l… Continue

Joseph Ting Who should play Full back for England in the Autumn Internationals?

I like Ben Foden , I think he is quick, illusive and more often than not he breaks the first line of defence. Jason Robinson was a one off but this guy reminds me of him. Having said that Cipriani would be my choice at fullback . His attacking brain given the chance to strike from anywhere wins it for me. His goal kicking offers the team a second option which will be a plus but its his ability with ball in hand and his running lines enabling him to go himself or to p

Tom Chapman My New Season

For an individual player, I believe there is no point more important than pre-season. It’s the place where you can wallow in mediocrity, or really push on from the previous campaign. This season I did the latter and went on three training camps, two with my academy and one with England. A wide range of skills and techniques were used to challenge me, and as a scrum half, my main objectives were to bulk up and gain more consistency with my passing. Gaining these skills will hopefully enable me to… Continue
